What happens if Greenland pushes Earth past a climate tipping point?
The Greenland Ice Sheet is melting into the North Atlantic, sending vast amounts of fresh water into one of the most important ocean systems on Earth: the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or AMOC.
This current acts like a giant conveyor belt, carrying warm tropical water north toward Europe before cold, salty water sinks near Greenland and flows back south through the deep ocean. But as Greenland melts, that fresh water can weaken the sinking process that keeps the entire system moving.
