At first, scientists thought Neptune was just a cold, boring ball of gas way out in the solar system. But then, Voyager 2 flew by in 1989 and completely changed everything. It revealed that Neptune has crazy storms, including one even bigger than Earth, called the Great Dark Spot. The planet also has the fastest winds in the solar system — we’re talking over 1,200 miles per hour! Plus, Neptune’s deep blue color turned out to be a total mystery, since it’s not just from methane like they expected. Ever since, Neptune has been one of the most exciting planets to study, and there’s still so much we don’t know about it.
