The new data from the James Webb Telescope is shocking the industry—never before have we seen the explosion of Betelgeuse so clearly. The red supergiant star is ejecting tons of mass into space, and some of it will reach us. Star explosions of this magnitude are rare, at least in our immediate cosmic neighborhood. This event tells us more about the dramatic mechanisms that prevail in the final stages of a star’s life, and the explosion also shows us the enormous scale of cosmic cycles.
