Digital ID is being rolled out globally, reshaping how governments verify identity, track behaviour and manage access to both public and private services. The bait is convenience through having one login for multiple services. Yet once enrolled a centralized identity is created which can be used to link identity, financial activity and behaviour. It represents the creation of a dystopian digital cage.
Despite, the media narratives and politicians portrayal of digital ID as Brit cards or downloadable app, the rollout of centralized digital ID systems has actually been long underway. This is taking place through a process of incremental onboarding phase by phase. As ID verification links across multiple services, citizens unwittingly become part of a growing infrastructure, irrespective of whether they choose to engage with the digital wallet.
