At first glance, 3i Atlas shouldn’t be that interesting. It’s far away, moving fast, not dangerous, and it looks like just another comet on a strange orbit. But the closer scientists looked, the more small things refused to line up. None of it is dramatic on its own. But that’s the problem. How many small mismatches does it take before the explanation stops being simple? And what happens if this object isn’t unusual at all—but representative of something we’ve barely started to notice?
